My friends are addicted

Teen writes powerful letter to Prime Minister on legal highs

A Washington Valley teenager has written a powerful letter to the prime minister, urging him to ban legal highs because “most of my friends are addicted to them”. Whetu Wade’s letter started as a task in his school English class. The students were asked to write a hypothetical letter to the editor of their local newspaper and Whetu wrote his on legal highs. “It’s really addictive for anyone, but espe-

cially young people. I’ve seen young people that haven’t had it in a while and [they] are quick to anger. Most of my friends are addicted to legal highs,” he wrote. His teacher thought it was so good he forwarded it to Nelson Weekly to print and then helped Whetu write another letter, this time to John Key. Whetu explained how easy it was for under-agers to buy legal highs and how it was

making them do “idiotic stuff ” and “vomit all over the place”. He urged the PM to ban them for life. Youth Nelson teacher Daniel Hawke, says legal highs directly affect young people and he’s proud of Whetu addressing the issue so well. “We deal with the effects of legal highs on a regular basis. It’s a really challenging part of our jobs, but amongst those challenges we have great successes,

Whetu’s success here is just one of those.” Last year the government passed the Psychoactive Substances Act, which means “low risk” products can be sold to people over 18. Councils can pass their own bylaws, but Nelson City Council has put its draft local approved products policy on hold until it receives more information from the government For full letter, turn to page 11.

Thrills and plenty of spills at trolley derby

There were plenty of spills and plenty of smiles at the weekend’s Robertson’s Trolley Derby, which has been labelled another success. There seemed to be more crashes at this year’s event, with the wind playing havoc with some of the young drivers. But there were no serious accidents, and the weather didn’t deter the drivers in the Monarch of the Hill event, with eventual winner Gordon Dacombe clocking 71km/h in his Aussie Flash trolley. Even some of the younger drivers reached speeds in excess of 40km/h and Nelson Trolley Club president Tim Bayley says the trick is to not turn the steering wheel, otherwise it might end in tears. The Zoomers class for 6-10 year old competitors, won by Kobi Furniss, drew the most entries, with “seven or eight” more than last year’s event. The new Mitre10 F1 Corporate Challenge, which saw businesses enter a trolley, was won by Steffano’s Pizzeria.

Arsonist could be behind kart track fire

ProKarts Nelson owner Nick Fowler could be forgiven for watching on in despair as his business went up in flames. But his actions helped save a neighbouring building and thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment. Nelson fire senior officer Craig Davies says Nick was a huge help for them. “When we arrived the owner was there and he was fairly upset, but he assisted us greatly in mitigating the damage by explaining where things were. He was a great help.” The Fire Service were called to the fire at 12.05am on Monday morning. When

they arrived it was fully ablaze. Craig says it was a difficult situation. “We were hampered by the water supply being a couple of hundred metres away and knowing there were things like fuel, tyres and karts in the building.” The neighbouring building that was saved was also used by ProKarts to store equipment. Craig says the fire is suspicious as there were three other small fires in the area, including one behind the skating rink. “We suspect arson, but we can’t confirm that yet. We have investigators there today [Monday],” he says.

If the cost to bring the Trafalgar Centre’s foundations up to standard remains at more than $20 million, then expect to see it bulldozed. Nelson City Council closed the city’s only major events’ centre in December and last week released previously confidential reports to the public. Those reports showed how the centre would likely fail in a significant earthquake, as the northern end of the centre is built on poor soil. To fix the problem could cost up to $27 million, according to one of the reports and lawyers’ advice said the council should close the facility as they would be liable under the health and safety act if people died. But some of the information in one of the reports was questioned by members of the public, including how deep the foundations were. Official advice was three metres, but resident Kerry Neal found an old newspaper clipping that reported the foundations were ten metres deep. That forced councillors to tell engineers to pay a visit to the centre and

But Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says even if the foundations are deeper it doesn’t change the risk, as it’s the sideways movement that will cause the damage. She says the councillors are determined to do everything they can to get the Trafalgar Centre up and running, without it costing tens of millions of dollars. Rachel says she has asked another engineer to have a look over all the reports, to see if he can think of any other solutions. “I’m desperate to do everything we can to find a solution for the Trafalgar Centre.” If that can’t happen, she says the likely preference would be

to pull it down and rebuild it with Rutherford Park still the most likely location. “It could be that we turn a new building around or put it elsewhere on Rutherford Park, there’s a big area there so there are options.” She said there were other sites closer to the CBD but those wouldn’t be explored until the Trafalgar Centre had been completely written off. She said the council hopes to have all the information it requires to make a final decision by midJune “at the absolute latest”. If a new building was to go ahead she says decisions would have to be made around what it would look like and whether it would include facilities for performing arts.

Public to have say on parking MAN foUND DEAD: Police have identified a man found dead on Whakatu Drive about 12:10am on Monday morning. On Monday they asked for help from members of the public to identify the man who they described as being between 18 and 30. But just a few hours later said they had identified him. Nelsonians will have the chance to voice their opinion on the city’s car parking policy. Nelson City Council will release a draft of its parking strategy next month, which will look at Nelson’s parking issues and it will be open for public consultation. Parking has been in the spotlight over recent months, as the city battles with Richmond’s focus on free car parking and tough policing from the council’s new contractor of parking, Environmental In-

Giant egg ‘like four in one’

Nina Morris collects hundreds of eggs from her chickens every year, but she got a big shock last week when one of them laid an egg “four times” the size of a regular one. The Ruby Bay woman found the egg is one of the nest boxes at her free range chicken farm, which perhaps ruled out the possibility of it coming from another animal. She measured it and says the circumference was 19cm. “I just thought ‘my gosh’. I’ve had big eggs but not like that,” she says. “That’s just absolutely massive. I measured it and it’s 10cm long and 19cm around it.” She says people’s first question when she shows it to them is if the chicken survived. She assures them it did.

Mayor says hope not lost on wood burner changes Hope may not be lost for people wanting to install a fire to keep warm this winter. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says she still wants to see families with “capped”, or closed-off fire places able to install a “clean air” fire before the start of winter, which is at direct odds with councillor and chair of the planning and regulatory committee, Brian McGurk. Last week Brian told Nelson Weekly that it was unlikely significant changes would be made before the start of winter, due to the length of time it takes to make changes to the Nelson Air Quality Plan. But Rachel says because the rules around air fall in a “regional”, not “district”, category with the Resource Management Act, it means the council may be able to make changes with almost immediate effect. Grey Power president Neville Male says it was “very disappointing” to read Brian’s comments last week and they would continue to fight to get changes made before winter. He says hundreds of elderly will struggle to keep warm this winter if significant changes aren’t made. Councillor Tim Skinner is another determined to see changes and proposes that all homes with existing fires can upgrade them with approved burners and be

He would then like to see new homes and other homes that took their fire places out for heat pumps, allowed to install clean air fires in their homes. He says there have been huge gains in clean air since the Nelson Air Quality Plan was worked on ten years ago and coal burning furnaces at Alsco, Nelson Hospital, Nelson Intermediate and Nelson College have all been replaced. “There have been huge gains and if we go over the air pollution standards for one or two nights over winter, but that means families are warm, I think that’s ok.” He says the rising cost of electricity means some people may have regretted pulling out their fire places for heat pumps. Rachel says councillors are divided on the topic but she believes it’s a huge issue. “We are running out of time [before winter]. What’s really important to understand is that this hurts families, it really does. They’re looking at electricity prices rises and a rise in mortgage repayments.” The council will next meet on the issue on May 8.

Railway makes a return to Nelson The inside of the Stoke Memorial Hall will replicate a miniature railway town this weekend, with the sixth Nelson Model Railway Exhibition taking place on Saturday and Sunday. The show, which is held biennially, will feature nine layouts covering most of the building. Just three of the exhibitors will be from Nelson,

with most coming from Christchurch including one layout, made to look like the Hornby Station, which is 15 metres long. “It takes up a fair chunk of the hall,” organiser Ian McEwan jokes. “The other ones are a bit smaller.” Ian says it’s a hobby that covers a multitude of skills, including carpentry, electronics and art. “The idea is to get a train

moving through a scene which is actually believable. Some of them are modelled on actual lines or railways, while others are what we call freelance, where they create their own topography.” The show runs from 10am until 5pm both days and entry is $5 for an adult, $2 for a child or $10 for a family of two adults and three children.

Dumped sheep carcasses disgust police The discovery of dumped sheep carcasses, maggot-infested fish remains and other rubbish is “disturbing” and “lazy”, according to the constable that found them near the road side. Nyanne Graf-Pollard made the gross discovery when attending the scene of a car accident that occured last year on the Moutere Highway, just after lunch on Thursday. While the forensic photographer photographed the scene, Nyanne took a stroll down the road to “get out the way”. On her brief walk, she came across “at least six” dead carcasses, rotting fish, and dumped household waste near Bisley Rd,

a gravel forestry road. “I found the ribcage and bones of other animals down the bank, but there are at least six dead animals. The smell was pretty disgusting,” says Nyanne. A spokesperson from Tasman District Council says this offence is serious and, if the offender is found, they could receive a $400 fine. “It is serious for a number of reasons not the least being rubbish, health issues and whatever could be within the rubbish. It can be hazardous as well as not being a very nice experience for those who come across it.” Nyanne estimated the dumped waste to

She wouldn’t rule out the possibility that the animals had been poached and left on the site, which was part of a forestry block. “It makes you wonder what happened to them before they got to that point. Looking at the amount of rubbish and various types, I suggest it could be more than one individual. It’s a small area and it’s hard to say because a lot of that had been there for a while, but if it’s one person they might have been back multiple times.” The council dispatched contractors to clean up and dispose of the mess late last week. An enquiry would be made into who dumped the waste and why.

Stoke Companions celebrate 25 years For 25 years a small group of folk over the age of 55 have been meeting for light exersise, to listen to guest speakers and general companionship. And on Monday the current members of Stoke Companions celebrated the milestone. The group meets each Wednesday morning but also has a mid-year lunch and Christmas lunch, along with barbeques. On Monday they visited Gardens of the World before heading to the Playhouse for a celebratory lunch and cutting of the cake. Group secretary Mary Ford says it was a great day out and the group is looking forward to the next 25 years.

'Irresponsible' riders put track in jeopardy Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz A few irresponsible mountainbikers are putting their lives at risk and jeopardising forest trail access for hundreds of other riders by ignoring warning signs and riding into logging areas in the Hira Forest near Nelson. Last month Hancock Forest Management started new logging operations in the Hira Forest resulting in the temporary closure of a number of trails in the popular Codgers Mountainbike Park. Warning signs and barriers were erected to keep riders out of the logging areas but the Nelson Mountainbike Club and Hancock are concerned that a "minority" of riders are still ignoring the closures. Club president Paul Jennings says logging operations are potentially dangerous with trees being felled and heavy machinery op-

erating and it's not safe for riders. Free treasure hunt in The Wood A passionate Wood resident is organising a community treasure hunt this weekend and inviting everyone to take part. Marcia Higgs has organised the hunt, which is on this Sunday, rain or shine, and allows participants to visit various groups and activities in The Wood. Free meat for neighbours Neighbourhoods around the city are preparing to join forces and celebrate Neighbours Day with barbeques, clean up days and even a simple cup of tea. Neighbours Day Aotearoa is on March 30 and is designed to turn “streets into neighbourhoods” by bringing residents closer together. Neighbourhood Support manager Kim MacDonald says she knows of dozens of Nelson streets planning get-togethers and she has a little incentive for those thinking about organising something on their street. Kim has 13 meat pack vouchers from Pestell’s, each worth $50, and she says they’ll be given to streets who want to plan a street barbeque. She’s already given 17 vouchers away. “It’s about turning streets into neighbourhoods. Taking that time and making those connections to get to know somebody. It could be two people having a cuppa or it could be a whole street doing a clean-up, garage sales, barbeques.” Kim says the day is a nice way to finish summer before people “retreat” indoors for the winter and people hoping for ideas or

Legal highs are bad for our young people: People smoke legal highs to look cool in front of their friends. Lots of young people smoke legal highs to trip out [hallucinate] they see things that people don’t believe in. By doing this it excites them, which is why people do legal highs. Young people access legal highs by asking homeless people to buy it for them. They buy it from [retailers]. Some places are still easy to access for young people if you look old enough. They even ask family members to access it for them. People under 18 can get it easy. It’s really addictive for anyone but especially young people. I’ve seen young people who haven’t had it in a while and are quick to anger. Most of my friends are addicted to legal highs. As a young person like myself I wonder why people do legal high. It just makes them look like druggies and makes them do idiotic stuff that they don’t usually do and makes them vomit all over the place. The mood they get depends on how they are feeling. If they’re feeling down they would have a down buzz or if they’re happy they would get a happy buzz but most of the time you get a down buzz. Legal highs should be banned for life. Volunteers needed for ‘health shuttle’ St John needs five volunteers to drive people to and from health related appointments in Nelson. The “Health Shuttle Team” operates each week day and is based at the St John office in Nelson. It transports people around the region and its volunteers are rostered on and are required to do at least one day per fortnight. Sarah McCabe, of St John, says it’s a much needed community service. “We need people who are friendly and reasonably active,” she says. Harvest Fare to celebrate the end of summer Richmond's popular street party has been given a new name, but the successful format of the annual family-friendly event in Sundial Square remains unchanged. The Last of the Summer Fare has been rebranded as the Summer Harvest Fare to reflect the fact that it is a celebration of the region's harvest. But Richmond Unlimited's Kim Quint says this Friday's Sprig & Fern-sponsored event will still be based around "getting together with friends and family and enjoying good music, wine, beer and food". "Everyone always looks forward to it," Kim says. "It's a nice way to celebrate the

It has come to our attention that there has been a resurgence in idiotic driving by a small group of drivers in our area. I'm talking about the young guns in souped up cars who in an attempt to impress their friends by taking enormous risks to leave a good portion of their tyres on the tarmac. You may have picked by my tone that I for one am not impressed. You may remember we made a big impact on this small sector of our community a couple of years ago when we targeted their behaviour with an operation which resulted in 12 cars being impounded. Well, the next lot have emerged. These oafs seem to target blind corners to do burnouts where there's an incredibly high risk of an innocent member of the public being caught up in their mess. A number of people have reported this behaviour to us and I'd urge everyone to keep an eye out. If you see anyone driving in an irresponsible way call police immediately. Please don't wait until you get home as any delay reduces our chances of finding them. If possible get the registration plate and a description of the vehicle. Also note down the time and the place the incident has occurred. If we can catch up with these people they're likely to face prosecution and worse still, have their vehicle impounded. Parents should take note too, if you're letting someone use your car and they get involved in dangerous antics we'll be impounding the car they were driving, regardless of who the registered owner is. Our intention in the coming weeks is to target this sort of behaviour as we did back in May 2012. I don't want any innocent motorists sharing the road with people who behave in a deliberately dangerous manner. Rest assured we will be doing our level best to stamp this out again.

Nelson Marlborough District Health Board has launched its annual influenza immunisation campaign to immunise staff against the dreaded flu. Last year more staff than ever before were vaccinated against the seasonal flu strains most likely to hit New Zealand however still only 44 per cent of health professionals and support workers were vaccinated.

This year the DHB is determined to get at least 50 per cent of staff vaccinated to protect patients and other staff from contracting or spreading influenza. A special focus of this year’s seasonal influenza immunisation programme is pregnant women and their newborn babies. Influenza vaccine has been used for many years in pregnant women, with

no safety concerns, and can be given in any trimester, says chief medical officer, Dr Nick Baker. Influenza immunisation is free from a GP or nurse until July 31, 2014 for New Zealanders at high risk of complications, including pregnant women, people aged 65 and over, and anyone under 65 years of age, who may be less able to flight influenza.

Posh picnic to kick start new exhibition What better way for Broadgreen House to celebrate the opening of their transport exhibition, A Path Well Travelled, than a Posh Picnic. The idea for the Picnic comes from a Gatsby style picnic that is held in Napier as part of their Art Deco week. All the car clubs in Nelson have been invited to take part. It is hoped that they will dress up in costumes appropriate to their cars and bring their fanciest picnic gear. In Napier, people go the extra mile, setting up tents and gazebos and bringing out their tablecloths, silver teapots and china, even their gramophones. It’s just something different and rather fun to do.” The Posh Picnic is a great way to kick off Broadgreen’s exhibition that focuses on the early forms of transport, particularly the way in which people used to get around between Nelson, Stoke and Richmond. Nelson College boys and Waimea College girls will head to this weekend’s New Zealand Secondary School Volleyball Championship as top seeds from the region, after taking out the Tasman Championship. Held at Saxton Stadium on both Saturday and Sunday. The Tasman Secondary School Championship saw 12 teams compete, all hoping to qualify for division one, and decide their seeding for the national championship. Nelson College reversed their disappointing result at a recent Blenheim tournament, and also the South Island Secondary Championship final, by beating Waimea College in a five set thriller to secure the top seed. Waimea College and Nayland College will still compete in the top tier of the competition, landing the final two seeding spots. In the girls draw, five teams will be placed in the top tier, including regional winners Waimea College, who also won the South Island championship. Waimea won important games against Marlborough Girls College and Nelson College for Girls on the weekend. Waimea College Green, which is essentially their B team, and Nayland, claimed the final division one spots.

Marist return to top flight A well recruited Marist will return to the top tier of club rugby this year, and their new captain is confident they can hit the ground running. Halfback Shawn Begg will captain “The Green Machine” in their returning season, having dropped out of the Nelson Bays division one competition last year due to insufficient player numbers. Marist have perennially been one of the strongest teams in Nelson, and won the last of their seven senior rugby title just three years ago. With a raft of player departures robbing the competition of one of its top teams in the 2013 season, Marist coaches Nick Bright and Callum Taylor have smartly recruited a mixture of youth and experience ahead of the coming campaign, which kicks off this Saturday. Shawn, who played his junior rugby at Marist, before spending eight years with Stoke, will lead a team that also includes championship winning flanker Dan Hytongue, who arrives from Waimea Old Boys, exciting fullback Latham Jones, and young utility Lote Saulekaleka from Nayland College. Shawn, a former Tasman Mako, chose to move across to Marist because he was getting “stale” at Stoke and had achieved all he could

with the club. “I played all my JAB at Marist, and I’ve always respected the club and the players who have been here before. They’ve had a lot of superstars really, guys like Mark Bright, and it was something new to get me excited about rugby.” After an injury-ridden season prevented Shawn from cracking the Tasman squad last year, he has set the goal of returning to ITM Cup in 2014 – and hopes strong performances with Marist will help him achieve that. “Obviously a change of scenery will hopefully light up more of a fire,” he says. “I just want to play the best I can and be the best I can. But looking at the way that [Tasman] forward pack was playing I’d love to be playing behind that. It was hard watching but I’d love to be back in that environment.” Marist’s return means the Car Company Division One championship is back up to a full complement of six teams. They will face last year’s finalists Wanderers in Brightwater this Saturday while Stoke travel to Riwaka to play Kahurangi and Nelson are at home to Waimea Old Boys. All games kick off at 3pm.

Beach cricket comp coming to Tahuna Considering how popular our beaches are and the fact that cricket is our summer sport, it makes sense to combine the two. Nelson Cricket will launch its inaugural beach cricket tournament this Sunday at Tahunanui Beach, and there’s a good chance it will feature again as a fan activity during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. Organiser Jon Routhan says the idea has been in the pipeline for quite a while. “The council are really keen to get behind it, with an eye to do doing more when the world cup starts,” he says. “I think that’s key and they’ve been really accommodating. Yes it is a new event, but it’s something we’ve wanted to
